🌼 PART 1: DAISY CENTER (Mustard Yellow)

We work in continuous spiral rounds. Use a stitch marker to track the beginning of each round.

Rnd 1: MR, 6 sc into ring. Pull tight. (6 sts)

Rnd 2: Inc in each st around. (12 sts)

  • Increase = 2 sc in same stitch

Rnd 3: [Sc 1, inc] — repeat 6 times. (18 sts)

Rnd 4: [Sc 2, inc] — repeat 6 times. (24 sts)

Rnd 5: Sc in each st around. (24 sts)

Rnd 6: Sc in each st around. (24 sts)

Sl st to next st. DO NOT fasten off — we will work the petals directly onto this round.

💡 Tip: The center should lay flat and measure approximately 3.5-4 cm across. If it's curling, your tension may be too tight.

🌸 PART 2: WHITE PETALS (12 petals total)

Switch to white yarn. Join white yarn with a slip stitch to any stitch on Round 6 of the center.

Each petal is worked over 2 stitches of the center. We will make 12 petals total.

SINGLE PETAL PATTERN:

Petal: [Sl st, ch 8, starting in 2nd ch from hook: sc, hdc, dc, tr, dc, hdc, sc, sl st into same st as base, sl st into next st of center]

Let me break this down step-by-step:

  1. Sl st into a stitch on the center (anchors petal)
  2. Ch 8 (this creates the petal spine)
  3. Turn and work back down the chain:
    • Starting in 2nd ch from hook: sc
    • Next ch: hdc
    • Next ch: dc
    • Next ch: tr (tallest stitch — petal tip)
    • Next ch: dc
    • Next ch: hdc
    • Next ch: sc
  4. Sl st into the same base stitch where you started
  5. Sl st into the next stitch of the center to prepare for next petal

Complete Round of Petals:

Rnd 7 (Petal Round):

Repeat the Single Petal Pattern 12 times around the entire center. You should skip 1 stitch between petals.

Pattern: [Sl st, ch 8, work petal as described above, sl st to anchor, sl st to next center st] — repeat 12 times.

After completing the 12th petal, sl st to the base of the first petal to join.

FO white yarn. Leave a 15cm (6 inch) tail.

🪡 FINISHING:

  1. Weave in ends: Use yarn needle to weave in the yellow and white yarn tails on the back (wrong side) of the coaster. Weave through several stitches in different directions for security.

  2. Block the coaster (optional but recommended):

    • Lightly mist the coaster with water or use a spray bottle
    • Pin petals evenly on a blocking mat or towel
    • Let air dry completely (2-4 hours)
    • This makes petals lay flat and symmetrical
  3. Shape petals: Gently stretch and shape each petal to create even, rounded tips.

💡 TIPS FOR BEGINNERS:

✅ Keep tension consistent — loose enough to see the petal shape, tight enough so it doesn't look floppy

✅ Count your stitches — you should have exactly 7 stitches plus 1 slip stitch in each petal chain

✅ Use stitch markers — mark the beginning of Round 1 on the center so you can count accurately

✅ Practice the petal first — make a test chain of 8 and practice the stitch sequence before attaching to center

✅ Even spacing is key — make sure you're skipping 1 stitch between each petal for symmetry

✅ Steam blocking works wonders — if you have a steamer, hover it above (don't touch!) the petals to set the shape

✨ VARIATIONS & IDEAS:

🌼 Color Combinations:

  • Classic white petals + yellow center
  • Pink petals + coral center (Gerbera daisy style)
  • Lavender petals + white center
  • Rainbow petals (each petal a different color!) + yellow center

🌼 Size Variations:

  • Mini daisy (6-7cm): Start with 4 sc in MR, work to 18 sts center, use ch-6 petals instead of ch-8
  • Large daisy (15-18cm): Work center to 36 sts, use ch-10 petals with additional dc stitches

🌼 Different Uses:

  • Coaster (as shown)
  • Applique for bags, hats, or clothing
  • Wall decoration (stiffen with fabric stiffener)
  • Bookmark (make mini version)
  • Garland (make multiple and string together)
  • Headband decoration
  • Gift tag or card embellishment

🌼 Add-ons:

  • Embroider small white stitches in the yellow center for texture
  • Add a safety pin on back to make a brooch
  • Sew onto a fabric square to make a mug rug
  • Make multiple and join for a table runner

🧵 TROUBLESHOOTING:

Problem: Petals are curling up

  • Solution: Your tension may be too tight. Try going up one hook size for petals only.

Problem: Center is doming/curving

  • Solution: You may have too many stitches. Recount Round 4. Should be exactly 24 sts.

Problem: Petals are uneven sizes

  • Solution: Count the chains carefully (should be 8 every time). Also check that you're working stitches in correct order.

Problem: Gap between petals

  • Solution: Make sure you're only skipping 1 stitch between petals, not 2.
