📝 MASTER CLASS: Pastel Boho Crochet Rainbow Wall Hanging
✨ About This Project:
This adorable pastel boho rainbow wall hanging is a perfect beginner-friendly crochet project that will add a warm, cozy touch to any nursery, bedroom, or living space. The rainbow is worked in rows using simple single crochet stitches, creating thick, chunky arches layered on top of each other. Tassels are added at the bottom of each arch for a beautiful boho finish.
🧶 Materials & Tools:
- Yarn: Chunky or bulky weight cotton yarn (weight category 5 or 6) — cotton gives the best stiffness and definition for this type of wall hanging. Recommended brands: Paintbox Simply Chunky, Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton (bulky), Drops Safran (for finer version), or any similar 100% cotton chunky yarn.
-
Colors needed (pastel palette as shown):
- Cream/Off-white — approx. 80g
- Lavender/Light purple — approx. 40g
- Peach/Salmon — approx. 35g
- Mint/Sage green — approx. 30g
- Dusty rose/Mauve pink — approx. 35g
- Total yarn: approx. 220g across all colors
- Crochet hook: 5.0 mm or 5.5 mm (adjust to your tension — the fabric should be dense and firm, not loose)
- Scissors
- Yarn needle (tapestry needle for weaving in ends)
- Wooden dowel or thick twig — approx. 30 cm (12 inches) wide, for hanging
- Thin cord or twine — for the hanging triangle (as shown in the image)
- Stitch markers (optional but helpful for beginners)
- Ruler or measuring tape
📐 Finished Size:
Approximately 28–32 cm wide × 25–28 cm tall (not including tassels). Tassels add approximately 5–7 cm to the bottom length. Total hanging height with cord: approximately 45–50 cm.
⭐ Skill Level: Beginner-friendly (requires only basic single crochet knowledge)
📖 Abbreviations & Stitch Guide:
Before we begin, here is a complete guide to all abbreviations used in this pattern. Please read through these carefully before starting, as they will be used throughout the instructions without further explanation.
- ch = chain — the most basic crochet stitch; yarn over hook, pull through loop. This creates a chain of loops.
- sc = single crochet — insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop (2 loops on hook), yarn over again, pull through both loops. This is the main stitch used in this pattern.
- sl st = slip stitch — insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull through both the stitch AND the loop on hook in one motion. Used for joining and finishing.
- st(s) = stitch(es) — refers to any individual stitch
- ch-sp = chain space — the space created by a chain
- rep = repeat
- RS = right side (the front/visible side of your work)
- WS = wrong side (the back side)
- turn = turn your work around to begin the next row in the opposite direction
- FO = fasten off — cut yarn, pull tail through last loop to secure
💡 Important Notes Before Starting:
Each arch of the rainbow is crocheted separately as a flat strip, then the strips are assembled together by sewing or slip-stitching them on top of each other from largest (outermost/cream) to smallest (innermost/dusty rose). The rainbow shape is achieved by crocheting a long flat strip and then bending it into an arch shape — the dense sc fabric holds the shape beautifully, especially with cotton yarn. The tassels are made separately and attached at the end.
🌈 PATTERN INSTRUCTIONS:
ARCH 1 — Cream/Off-White (Outermost, Largest Arch)
This is the foundation arch and the largest one. It forms the outer frame of the rainbow.
Foundation chain: With cream yarn and 5.5mm hook, ch 65.
- Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each ch across — 64 sc total. Turn.
- Rows 2–6: ch 1, sc in each st across — 64 sc. Turn.
After Row 6, do NOT fasten off yet. Work a border of sl st all around the entire strip to give it a neat, firm edge: sl st along the long side, around the short ends, and back along the other long side. FO. Weave in ends.
💡 Tip: This strip should measure approximately 32 cm long × 3.5 cm wide when laid flat. When bent into an arch, it will form the outer cream border you see in the image.
ARCH 2 — Lavender/Light Purple
Foundation chain: With lavender yarn, ch 57.
- Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each ch across — 56 sc. Turn.
- Rows 2–5: ch 1, sc in each st across — 56 sc. Turn.
Work sl st border all around. FO. Weave in ends.
💡 Strip should measure approximately 28 cm long × 3 cm wide.
ARCH 3 — Peach/Salmon
Foundation chain: With peach yarn, ch 49.
- Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each ch across — 48 sc. Turn.
- Rows 2–5: ch 1, sc in each st across — 48 sc. Turn.
Work sl st border all around. FO. Weave in ends.
💡 Strip should measure approximately 24 cm long × 3 cm wide.
ARCH 4 — Mint/Sage Green
Foundation chain: With mint yarn, ch 41.
- Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each ch across — 40 sc. Turn.
- Rows 2–4: ch 1, sc in each st across — 40 sc. Turn.
Work sl st border all around. FO. Weave in ends.
💡 Strip should measure approximately 20 cm long × 2.5 cm wide.
ARCH 5 — Dusty Rose/Mauve Pink (Innermost, Smallest Arch)
Foundation chain: With dusty rose yarn, ch 33.
- Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each ch across — 32 sc. Turn.
- Rows 2–4: ch 1, sc in each st across — 32 sc. Turn.
Work sl st border all around. FO. Weave in ends.
💡 Strip should measure approximately 16 cm long × 2.5 cm wide.
🔧 ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS:
Step 1 — Shape each arch:
Take your cream strip (Arch 1) and bend it gently into a smooth U/arch shape. The two ends of the strip will be the bottom "legs" of the rainbow. Pin it onto a flat foam board or lay it on a towel to hold the shape while you assemble. Repeat with all other arches, making each one slightly smaller and nested inside the previous one.
Step 2 — Layer the arches:
Place Arch 1 (cream) as your base. Center Arch 2 (lavender) on top of it, with a small gap between them so both colors are visible. Using your yarn needle and a matching color of yarn, sew the lavender arch to the cream arch with small, invisible stitches along the inner curve. Continue layering: peach on top of lavender, mint on top of peach, dusty rose on top of mint. Each arch sits centered on the previous one.
💡 Tip: Use pins to hold everything in place before sewing. Take your time with this step — good alignment makes the finished rainbow look professional and neat.
Step 3 — Attach to wooden dowel:
Once all arches are assembled, attach the top of the cream arch to the wooden dowel. You can do this by sewing the top of the arch directly to the dowel using cream yarn, wrapping the yarn around the dowel and through the top stitches of the arch several times until secure.
Step 4 — Add the hanging cord:
Cut a piece of thin cord or twine approximately 50 cm long. Tie each end to one end of the wooden dowel to create a triangular hanging loop, as shown in the image.
🎀 MAKING THE TASSELS:
Each color arch has 2 tassels hanging from its bottom legs (one on each side), giving a total of 10 tassels. The cream arch may optionally have no tassels or 2 small ones — refer to the image.
To make one tassel:
- Cut 10–12 strands of yarn in the matching arch color, each approximately 14–16 cm long.
- Fold the bundle in half.
- Using a crochet hook, pull the folded loop through the bottom corner stitch of the corresponding arch leg.
- Pull the loose ends through the folded loop and tighten to create a tassel knot.
- Trim all tassel ends to an even length of approximately 5–6 cm below the knot.
💡 Tip: For fuller tassels, use more strands (up to 16). For a more delicate look, use 8 strands. Make sure all tassels are trimmed to the same length for a neat, uniform finish.
✅ FINISHING:
Weave in all remaining yarn ends carefully using your tapestry needle. Give the finished rainbow a gentle steam block if needed (hold a steam iron a few centimeters above the surface without touching) to even out any uneven stitches and help the arches hold their shape. Your rainbow is ready to hang!
